There are a number of ways to depict the legacy of the Samsui Women but by and large, history has always painted them bleakly as victims of one form or another. We studied the history of these women and saw their story as a uniquely empowering one. Judging from their independence and strength, there was little doubt in our minds that these women represent the early vestiges of feminism in Asia. They arrived AND survived here at a time when reliance on a male provider was a societal norm. Their resilience, independence, courage and work ethic is indisputable. We honour them with this t-shirt simply titled, ’Samsui Chick’.
